10-6-25 THOUGHTS
We are cautioned to learn God and not the world in this reading. There’s a sad humor in the description of idols. We cannot make these words so distant that we cannot learn from them. Col 3:5 Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. I note a description that says “they can do no harm, nor can they do any good...” Church, our world is filled with such!
The closing exalts our God, and that’s the reason for choosing the reading! Twice we read “There is none like You”!
Jer 10:1-7 Hear the word which the LORD speaks to you, O house of Israel. 2 Thus says the LORD, "Do not learn the way of the nations, And do not be terrified by the signs of the heavens Although the nations are terrified by them; 3 For the customs of the peoples are delusion; Because it is wood cut from the forest, The work of the hands of a craftsman with a cutting tool. 4 "They decorate it with silver and with gold; They fasten it with nails and with hammers So that it will not totter. 5 "Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field are they, And they cannot speak; They must be carried, Because they cannot walk! Do not fear them, For they can do no harm, Nor can they do any good." 6 There is none like You, O LORD; You are great, and great is Your name in might. 7 Who would not fear You, O King of the nations? Indeed it is Your due! For among all the wise men of the nations And in all their kingdoms, There is none like You.
Our Prayer:
O God of all, our fear and reverence is Your due. May a sense of awe permeate our hearts and minds as we dwell on Your great and mighty name. Help us to walk humbly before you, and before the world we seek to enlighten with Your name. Awaken us and make us ready and able to serve. Help us to bear fruit as You have assigned. Lord, keep us from living our lives like “scarecrows in a cucumber field... neither harming nor doing good!” We love You our God in Jesus’ name, Amen.
